Famous writer Chinghiz Aitmatov dies at the age of 79 of pneumonia at a hospital in the southern German city Nuremberg on June 10.
Chinghiz Aitmatov’s state of health was assessed as critical before. Kyrghyzia Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed yesterday that the writer’ state of health took a turn for the worse, Information agency of Tatarstan reports referring to German Press news agency (DPA).
According to DPA, the writer took a treatment in Nuremberg, Germany with diagnosis “kidney failure” and “septic shock”. Nuremberg City Hospital put him into intensive care. Doctors said he was suffering from lung and renal failure after catching pneumonia.
The writer’s health deteriorated on May 16 in Kazan where he took part in shooting the documentary The Day Lasts More than a hundred Years.
Chinghiz Aitmatov was born in 1928 in a tiny village in Kyrgyzstan. His literary career took a big turn when in 1958 he wrote the novel 'Jamilya' which made him famous overnight. The text was translated into French by the poet Louis Aragon who called it 'the world's most beautiful love story'. It was Aitmatov’s later novel ‘The Scaffold’ (1988) that brought him fame in the West.
Aitmatov also served as Soviet, and later Kyrgyz ambassador, to Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as to the EU and NATO.
