Today is International day of journalists solidarity. This holiday was established in 1958 in Bucharest on the 4th Congress of International organization of journalists (IOJ) in memory of Czech journalist Yulius Fuchik, executed by Nazis on September 8, 1943.
Yulius Fuchik became world-wide famous due to his book “Reporting with a tippet on your neck”, written by him behind torture chambers of prison in Prague. His book was translated after his death into 70 languages of the world, and since 1958 the day of Fuchik’s death is commemorated as International journalists solidarity day.
As “GlaVred” reports, conferences, meetings which get together journalists from all over the world are held on this day all over the globe. They not only share their own experience, but also receive awards for their sometimes very dangerous work. Thus, for instance, Pulitzer Prize awarding - the most prestigious reward for the journalists of America – is held almost every September 8.
The oldest and biggest international journalist organization in the world is International organization of journalists (IOJ).
21 countries of Anti-Hitler coalition on the congress in Copenhagen founded it on June 8 1946. Aims and tasks of IOJ: to preserve peace and strengthening friendship and cooperation of nations through free, truthful and sincere information of general public; fighting against war propaganda, fascism, national and racial discrimination, conflicts of different kinds; preserving freedom of the press and journalists from monopolies influence; protection of journalists’ rights to write according to their dignity and beliefs, fighting against deception, libel and disinformation on the part of press; protection of journalists rights, fighting for the improvement of finance conditions of their being.
The organization established International journalistic award and a Honourable medal named after Yulius Fuchik, rewarded for the progressive professional activity promoting to maintaining peace and cooperation development and journalists unity.
