American jazz on Lenin’s birth day. Tuesday stars of world jazz performed in Kharkiv. Bill Evans’s quintet Soulgrass. All in all the musicians possess about a dozen Grammys together with Sting, Mick Jagger, Miles Davis and Joan Osborn. Three years ago from the leader of the band came off ‘pure styles’ and began to experiment. As a result, banjo and violin are on the same stage.
There have been no violin in jazz band for 70 years. It was played except for 30s last century perhaps, the musicians say. The Evans’s idea was to get the instrument back and combine the styles.
Bill Evans, musician, USA, “All the instruments – banjo, guitar, piano – they were all sounds. Ryan plays jazz – Ryan plays Blue Grass… we don’t know what’s the music called. We call it Soulgrass. Nobody knows what it means”.
The space for the experiment is left, music speaks. He’d rather include another acoustic guitar. The sound is good.
Improvisation - and not only on stage. During the break between the two parts of the concert Evans go away not to have a rest but personally sell his own discs and sign them. He came in Kharkiv in the scopes of tour to promote his new album. The result after the first part of the concert – this city likes experimental jazz and appreciates it.
Bill Evans, musician, USA (to the audience), “Pryemno buty tut” (from Ukrainian – It’s nice to be here).
