Vakhtanh Zhordaniya conductors contest, founded by the famous musician himself, won’t take place this year. The contest was traditionally held in Kharkiv in late August – early September. The competition of conductors of the international level from the annual will be turned into a biennale, that is it will be held every two years.
As Zhordaniya’s student and successor on the position of the seniour conductor of Kharkiv Philharmonic Society Yuriy Yanko says that the reasons for the contest to be held more seldom are organizational and financial. Vakhtanh Zhordaniya paid the most of the prizes from his own funds.
Yuriy Yanko, director and the seniour conductor of symphonic orchestra of the Kharkiv Phillarmonic Society: “We will hold it for sure, I can assure, whatever it may cost us. We will hold it probably nest year already. And maybe it will be named after Vakhtanh Zhordaniya.”
Vakhtanh Zhordaniya, who became world-famous still in 70s, and later was considered by right to be an outstanding conductor, he founded the contest “Vakhtanh Zhordaniya – the third millennium” five years ago. The first couple of years Zhordaniya was the head of the jury, and after that he quit: as he explained himself - not to suppress his name with the authority. The master wanted his contest to live after his death. He knew what he spoke about – it was 2 years before his death.
Vakhtanh Zhordaniya, conductor (USA): (25.08.2003) “This year I left it on purpose, as I wanted that this contest lived it own life without me. Maybe I won’t live then. May it live without me.”
Yuriy Yanko promises, that the membership of the contest participants won’t change – last time last year conductors from around 30 countries of the world performed in Kharkiv. Yanko considers that there should be more representatives in jury. The change of the contest regulation will only increase his prestige. Olympiads not without reason are held every four years.
