Plus five hundred years. Excavation are taking place on one of the central streets of Kharkiv. A group of scientists have taken away a layer of construction waste, opened the bottom and dug down to cultural layer of 17th century, the layer of Wild field, where they started finding fragments of crockery being almost of the same age as Kievan Russia.
An office building is supposed to be at the place of the present excavation. Before constructing a building, especially in the center of the city, archeological excavations are to take place. And this was the way how the first large-scale excavation in Kharkiv’s history began.
Just short of two meters of construction waste – is the trace of the last two hundred years. The remains of the old bases is from brick. Their traces became less and less visible and all in all it ends. After that – the delicate work begins with metal detector.
Historians have gone down to 17th century layer. This ground contained Polish, Sweden and Russian coins of the first Romanovs times and before-Peter epoch’s ceramics.
There three recessions in the pit – they are remains of housing buildings found by the archeological expedition during the first week. Historians also discovered a trace of fire place and puddle – here the excavation is to be continued as it is possible to find a treasure. In 17th century is was used to put money into clay crockery for the black day, that’s why it is often possible to discover money near fragments of crockery.
Tow layers more and scientists discovered what they didn’t think they would: layers the same age of Kievan Russia. The ceramics found is dated with 12-14 centuries. Archeologists remember annalistic Polovets town Sharukan, captured by Russian princes in 1111. There exist theories that this town should be searched on the territory of modern Kharkiv.
A couple centimeters of black ground between the two cultural layers, called as a sterile is without any discoveries. This is what scientists call as Wild field.
A gap in the history is the reason why Kharkiv can’t be officially called as only more than 300 years old, scientists say. The city is that old while it is inhabited, which is 354 years old for Kharkiv. In the meantime archeologists decide to increase the area of excavation to search for artifacts of 15-16th century.
